Some Jabos take up to 20 years to bloom for the first time, while the Red Jaboticaba in Brazil blooms after around 3 to 5 years. All Jabos grow very slowly in the first two years and would certainly be larger if it weren't for the winter-related growth stop. Auch im Norden Argentiniens gibt es ein paar bis dato nicht wissenschaftlich benannte Jaboticabas.Dort gibt es ca. 10 verschiedene Arten.Man hat sich jedoch in Argentinien nie wirklich die Zeit genommen und diese bestimmt, so dass diese noch heute mit synonymen Namen existieren.Die seltenste dieser argentinischen Jaboticabas dürfte diese Giant Piray sein.Von diesem Baum existiert bisher nur ein gefundener alter Baum in freier Natur, in der Piray River Region in der nördlichsten Provinz Misiones.Dieser Baum gehört einem alten Mann, der außerhalb der Stadt Eldorado wohnt und nur selten mit Menschen Kontakt hat.Ein alter Kauz - wie wir hier sagen. Das Besondere an dieser Jaboticaba sind seine erstaunlich großen Früchte (daher der Zusatzname Giant).Sie haben ein sehr saftiges Fruchtfleisch und einen köstlichen Geschmack. Sehr süß und typisch Jaboticaba.Die Blätter ähneln einer Plinia coronata und der Baum hat bei einer Nachzucht nach 7 Jahren das erste mal geblüht.Auf alle Fälle ist diese Jaboticaba nicht nur sehr selten sondern auch sehr interessant für spätere Selektionen mit anderen Plinias.Dieser Baum hält später kurzfristig Frost aus.Ich würde ihn dennoch bei mindestens 10 Grad überwintern.

The Plinia spiritosantensis actually comes from the southeastern Brazilian state of Espírito Santo. (hence the name) At the border in the state of Minas Gerais lies the Mucuri Valley, which is traversed by the 350km long Mucuri River (Rio Mucuri). And that's where this Jaboticaba was discovered. The fruits are dark blue in color and have velvety skin. The taste was described as excellent, very juicy and sweet. The trees themselves remain rather small and can survive somewhat longer dry periods.It is not a Jabo from the Cerrado region but in the border area with the Mata Atlântica.Please overwinter at at least 10 degrees.  Eine sehr seltene Jaboticaba aus dem Vale do Mucuri (Mucuri-Tal). Eigentlich stammt die Plinia spiritosantensis aus dem südöstlichen, brasilianischen Bundesstaat Espírito Santo. "mouthwatering".In the middle of the Rio Napo river there are river islands and one of them is called Isla Yarina.This island is almost 3km long but only about 300m wide. And if you look for the locations of this Jaboticaba with geo-coordinates, you end up (among other things) on exactly this island.So if you want to eat this fantastic fruit straight from the tree you have two options:1. the journey to this island and the search for the trees there (at the right season, of course) or2. growing such a tree yourself, which, by the way, bears fruit after just 4 to 5 years.Here it would probably be 7 years under optimal conditions. The care of this jaboticaba is similar to that of cocoa.Warm and humid. So it's better to be a little warmer in winter too.Please overwinter at at least 15 degrees. The growth of this Plinia is also slightly faster than other Jabos.Guaburiti likes sunny and partially shaded places, deep, well-drained soil and later produces lots of fruit. When this tree bears fruit everything is really full.In Brazil this is a sign for many birds and you can easily imagine what happens when the birds fly en masse to this tree.Like here with the starlings. The tree is almost empty afterwards and should then be protected with a net when it is outdoors.By the way: the Latin word "rivularis" means "near the river" or "near a river" and refers to the first place where this great Plinia was found.Please overwinter at at least 10 degrees.Es gibt eine Jaboticaba die völlig untypisch ihre Früchte nicht direkt am Hauptstamm bekommt, sondern bündelweise an den Ästen.Guaburiti (Plinia rivularis)Für mich ist diese Jabo eher in Richtung Myrciaria einzuordnen aber die Botaniker werden schon wissen weshalb es doch eine Plinia ist.Egal. Wichtig ist, dass es eine wirklich tolle Pflanze ist, die in mehrerer Hinsicht beeindruckt.Egal wo man liest oder sich unterhält: alle sagen, dass diese Frucht nicht nur gut schmeckt, sondern "sehr gut". Der Geschmack erinnert an Jaboticaba mit einem Mix von Mango, Maracuja, Pfirsisch und Gewürznelke und das Fruchtfleisch ist sehr saftig.Dieser Baum stammt aus dem Süden Brasiliens und kommt auch im Norden Argentiniens und kleinen Teilen in Paraguay vor.Er verträgt kurzfristige Fröste bis -4 Grad und bekommt seltener braune Blattspitzen als andere Plinias.Der Baum wird nicht sehr groß und ist sehr gut für eine Kübelhaltung geeignet. Das Wachstum dieser Plinia ist auch etwas schneller als von anderen Jabos. Guaburiti mag sonnige und halbschattige Plätze, einen tiefen, durchlässigen Boden und produziert später einmal Unmengen an Früchten. Das erkennt man auch gut an den Fotos. Wenn dieser Baum Früchte trägt ist wirklich alles voll.In Brasilien ist das ein Zeichen für viele Vögel und man kann sich gut vorstellen was passiert, wenn die Vögel in Massen zu diesem Baum fliegen. Wie hier bei uns mit den Staren. Der Baum ist hinterher fast leer gefuttert und sollte dann mit einem Netz geschützt werden wenn er im Freien steht.Übrigens: das lateinische Wort "rivularis" bedeutet "flussnah" bzw. "in der Nähe eines Flusses" und bezieht sich auf den damaligen ersten Fundort dieser tollen Plinia.Überwintern bitte bei mindestens 10 Grad.
