Annona mucosa is often called the "lemon meringue fruit" because of its distinctive aroma.
The flavor is unique and strongly reminiscent of lemon cream or lemon meringue pie, with subtle notes of pineapple and coconut.
As the name mucosa (Latin for slimy/mucilaginous) suggests, the white flesh is very soft, jelly-like, and juicy.
It melts on the tongue and is far less grainy than that of the related cherimoya.
The ripe (yellow) fruit is halved, and the flesh is scooped out with a spoon. The black seeds are not edible.
Biriba is a fast-growing, tropical tree that requires considerable attention in our latitudes.
Location & Light:
Sunny to partially shaded and definitely sheltered from the wind, as the wood is relatively soft and brittle.
Temperature:
It is one of the most cold-sensitive Annona species. It needs warmth year-round (ideally 20–30 °C).
Temperatures below 10 °C should be avoided; frost will almost immediately kill the plant.
High water requirement: The root ball should never dry out completely.
Unlike other Annonaceae, it can even tolerate very moist soil for short periods.
Growth: It grows extremely fast for a fruit tree and, under ideal conditions, can bear its first fruit after just 3 to 4 years.
By pruning, it can also be kept at a manageable size as a container plant.



Die Annona mucosa wird wegen ihres besonderen Aromas oft als „Zitronen-Baiser-Frucht“ bezeichnet.
Der Geschmack ist einzigartig und erinnert stark an Zitronencreme oder Zitronen-Baiser-Torte, mit leichten Noten von Ananas und Kokos.
Wie der Name mucosa (lateinisch für schleimig/schleimartig) andeutet, ist das weiße Fruchtfleisch sehr weich, geleeartig und saftig. 
Es schmilzt auf der Zunge und ist weit weniger körnig als das der verwandten Cherimoya.
Man halbiert die reife (gelbe) Frucht und löffelt das Fleisch heraus. Die schwarzen Samen sind nicht essbar.
Biriba ist ein schnelllebiger, tropischer Baum, der in unseren Breitengraden viel Aufmerksamkeit benötigt.
Standort & Licht:
Sonnig bis halbschattig und unbedingt windgeschützt, da das Holz relativ weich und brüchig ist.
Temperatur:
Sie ist eine der kälteempfindlichsten Annonen-Arten. Sie braucht ganzjährig Wärme (ideal 20–30 °C).
Temperaturen unter 10 °C sollten vermieden werden, Frost führt fast sofort zum Absterben der Pflanze.
Hoher Wasserbedarf: Der Wurzelballen sollte nie ganz austrocknen. 
Im Gegensatz zu anderen Annonen verträgt sie kurzzeitig sogar sehr feuchte Böden.
Wachstum: Sie wächst für einen Obstbaum extrem schnell und kann bei idealen Bedingungen bereits nach 3 bis 4 Jahren die ersten Früchte tragen. 
Durch Rückschnitt lässt sie sich auch als Kübelpflanze auf einer handhabbaren Größe halten.
