Chrysophyllum arenarium – Ameixa do Nordeste
An almost forgotten botanical rarity is celebrating its return:
Chrysophyllum arenarium, affectionately known as "Ameixa do Nordeste" in northern Brazil, was scientifically described as early as 1862 – and then barely mentioned for over 160 years.
It was only recently rediscovered near the coastal city of Fortaleza in the state of Ceará (Brazil) in a restinga (beach vegetation) region – full of vibrant fruits!
The small, robust tree bears orange fruits with juicy, sweet and sour flesh that surprises with a subtle cashew flavor – a true delight that delights not only collectors.
This plant is adaptable, thrives in sandy-loamy substrates, and prefers well-drained, deep soil – waterlogging should be avoided at all costs.
Since it originates from a dry coastal region, it tolerates dry periods well and is ideal for sunny, warm locations.
