The "Bruce" variety was bred in South Florida.
The fruits are particularly sweet and grow very large, weighing 0.75–1 kg.
The canistel is a sweet-tasting, large fruit of an evergreen tropical tree native to Central America, which was cultivated and selected by pre-Columbian civilizations.
Pouteria campechiana is an upright tree that grows to about 8 m tall, sometimes even taller. The leaves are evergreen, thin, and glossy. The canistel has cream-colored, fragrant flowers. The fruit is highly variable in shape and size, round or ovoid, with or without a pointed tip.
The fruits of Pouteria campechiana are yellow, smooth, and glossy. The flesh is thick, yellow, and delicious.
It is suitable for eating directly or for making juices, ice cream, etc.
They ripen in summer and fall.
The canistel is easy to grow. It thrives in many soils, including sandy and limestone.

Pouteria campechiana ist ein aufrecht wachsender Baum, der etwa 8 m hoch wird, manchmal sogar noch höher. Die Blätter sind immergrün, dünn und glänzend. Die Canistel hat cremefarbene, duftende Blüten. Die Frucht ist in Form und Größe sehr variabel, rund oder eiförmig, mit oder ohne spitzer Spitze. 
Die Früchte der Pouteria campechiana sind gelb, glatt und glänzend. Das Fruchtfleisch ist dick, gelb und köstlich.
Es eignet sich zum Direktverzehr oder zur Herstellung von Säften, Eis etc.
Sie reifen im Sommer und Herbst.
Die Canistel ist leicht anzubauen. Sie gedeiht auf vielen Böden, einschließlich Sand- und Kalksteinböden.
