True star anise (Illicium verum) is an evergreen tree known for its decorative, star-shaped fruits.
Aroma: The flavor is intense, sweet and spicy, and strongly reminiscent of licorice or anise.
However, it is sharper and more potent than common anise.
The essential oil anethole is responsible for the characteristic sweetness (up to 13 times sweeter than sugar).
It is a key ingredient in Chinese five-spice powder and is frequently used in meat dishes (pork, poultry), pho broths, as well as in desserts, mulled wine, and pastries.
This plant prefers bright to partially shaded locations.
The plant is not frost-hardy and cannot tolerate frost.
Ideal temperatures are between 15°C and 30°C.
In winter, it should be kept in a cool (approx. 13–15°C), bright location indoors.
It requires slightly acidic, humus-rich, and well-draining soil.
Keep evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging at all costs.
The tree usually bears its first fruit after about 5–6 years.
Please overwinter at a minimum temperature of 15°C.
