Baccaurea courtallensis / Mooti (Western Ghats Crimson Baccaurea)
Baccaurea courtallensis, locally known as Mooti or Mootikappalam, is a rare and striking wild fruit species belonging to the family Phyllanthaceae.
Native to the humid montane rainforests of the Western Ghats in Southern India (predominantly Kerala and Tamil Nadu), it thrives in the sheltered understory of high-elevation forest ecosystems.
A defining botanical feature of this species is its pronounced cauliflory: bright crimson flower clusters and dense fruiting spikes emerge directly from the main trunk and primary scaffold branches.
The spherical berries mature into a vibrant deep red to scarlet hue, enclosing translucent, juicy pulp with a pleasant, sweet-tart, refreshing flavor.
Botanically, Mooti forms a small to medium-sized evergreen tree adorned with glossy, dark green foliage.
Hailing from the cooler montane slopes of the Western Ghats, it shows slightly better tolerance for mild temperature drops than ultra-tropical lowland species, though it remains strictly frost-sensitive.
For successful cultivation, it prefers a partially shaded to bright location protected from intense afternoon sun, alongside a rich, slightly acidic, well-draining substrate kept consistently moist.
Overwintering is best maintained in a bright space at a minimum temperature of 12 to 15 °C (54 to 59 °F).
