Xanthophyllum amoenum, locally known in Borneo as Mararing or Buah Popo, is an extraordinary wild fruit rarity belonging to the Polygalaceae family. This fascinating species is native to the biodiverse lowland rainforests of Borneo and is celebrated among exotic fruit collectors as a hidden gem. Visually, the rounded, firm-shelled fruits resemble yellowish-brown wooden spheres harvested in dense clusters. Cracking open the tough outer rind reveals a brilliant snow-white, creamy, and juicy pulp enclosing the seed. Its flavor profile is an absolute delight: the flesh is wonderfully sweet, velvety, and carries a rich tropical taste strongly reminiscent of a fusion between mangosteen, rambutan, and fine vanilla custard. In cultivation, Xanthophyllum amoenum forms an elegant exotic plant with attractive dark green foliage that adapts very well to container growing with regular pruning. For optimal growth, it prefers a bright to semi-shaded location with high humidity, along with a nutrient-rich, well-draining, and consistently moist substrate. As a strictly tropical lowland rainforest species, it cannot tolerate any frost and must be overwintered in a bright, warm location at a minimum temperature of 12 to 15 °C (54 to 59 °F).

Die Xanthophyllum amoenum, regional bekannt als Mararing oder Buah Popo, ist eine außergewöhnliche Wildfrucht-Rarität aus der Familie der Kreuzblumengewächse (Polygalaceae). Diese faszinierende Art ist in den artenreichen Tieflandregenwäldern Borneos heimisch und gilt unter Fruchtsammlern als echter Geheimtipp. Optisch erinnern die rundlichen, festschaligen Früchte an gelb-braune Holzkugeln, die in dicht gepackten Büscheln geerntet werden. Knackt man die feste Schale auf, offenbart sich ein strahlend schneeweißes, cremig-saftiges Fruchtfleisch, das den Samen umschließt. Der Geschmack ist ein absolutes Highlight: Das Fruchtfleisch ist wunderbar süß, samtig und besitzt ein feines, tropisches Aromaprofil, das stark an eine Kombination aus Mangostane, Rambutan und feinem Vanillepudding erinnert. In Kultur entwickelt sich Xanthophyllum amoenum zu einem eleganten Exoten mit attraktivem, dunkelgrünem Laub und lässt sich durch regelmäßigen Rückschnitt sehr gut als exklusive Kübelpflanze pflegen.
