Plinia sp. "Escarlate" / Scarlet Jabuticaba (Plinia aureana x Plinia cauliflora "Red")
Plinia sp. "Escarlate", commonly referred to as Scarlet Jabuticaba, is one of the most highly prized and fast-growing hybrids belonging to the Myrtle family (Myrtaceae).
This cultivar represents a deliberate cross between the Red Jabuticaba (Plinia cauliflora "Red Hybrid") and Plinia aureana.
A defining characteristic of this hybrid is its exceptionally precocious nature: while pure wild species often require many years to reach maturity, Escarlate frequently begins blooming within just three to four years in warm tropical and subtropical conditions.
In temperate container culture, the onset of fruiting is slightly extended due to the mandatory winter dormancy period, yet it remains significantly faster than most traditional Jabuticaba species.
Botanically, it exhibits classic cauliflory, bearing flowers and fruits directly along the trunk and mature scaffold branches.
The berries transition into a striking deep red to dark crimson shade upon ripening, enclosing juicy, sweet pulp with an outstanding flavor profile.
With its high adaptability, compact habit, and ability to produce multiple crops per year under favorable conditions, the Scarlet Jabuticaba is widely considered one of the finest choices for container fruit production.
For optimal performance, it requires a bright to full-sun location paired with a well-draining, slightly acidic, organic-rich substrate kept consistently moist.
As a tropical/subtropical hybrid, it is sensitive to frost and must be overwintered in a bright, warm environment at a minimum temperature of 10 to 12 °C (50 to 54 °F).
Plinia sp. "Escarlate" / Scarlet Jabuticaba (Plinia aureana x Plinia cauliflora "Red")
