Plinia aureana "Branca Costada" / Costate White Jabuticaba
Plinia aureana "Branca Costada" is a rare variety belonging to the Myrtle family (Myrtaceae).
This form was collected in Indianópolis, Brazil, by the late plant collector Anestor Mezzomo.
In June 2020, Brazilian author and collector Marco de Lacerda ("Frutas No Brasil") offered a small number of seedlings, two of which were imported to Europe at that time.
The plant offered here is one of those two seedlings.
Due to frost damage prior to last winter, the plant was cut back from a height of approximately two meters to just above the soil line.
It is now producing new growth from the base. The root system and the underlying genetics of this plant are six years old.
Given the maturity of the root system, the plant is expected to resume flowering and fruiting within two to three years.
Botanically, the "Costada" (ribbed) form differs from smooth Aureana types by its distinctly ribbed, subglobose fruits featuring a small apical nipple, remaining light green even when fully ripe.
The translucent pulp surrounds one to three seeds and offers a sweet Jabuticaba flavor with subtle honey notes.
For optimal growth, it requires a bright to full-sun location along with a well-draining, slightly acidic substrate kept moist.
As a tropical/subtropical species, it must be overwintered in a bright, warm location at a minimum temperature of 10 to 12 °C (50 to 54 °F).

Plinia aureana "Branca Costada" / Gerippte Weiße Jabuticaba
Die Plinia aureana "Branca Costada" ist eine sehr seltene Form aus der Familie der Myrtengewächse (Myrtaceae).
Diese Varietät wurde von dem verstorbenen brasilianischen Pflanzensammler Anestor Mezzomo in Indianópolis (Brasilien) gesammelt.
Über den brasilianischen Buchautor und Sammler Marco de Lacerda ("Frutas No Brasil") gelangten im Juni 2020 einige Sämlinge in den Verkauf – zwei dieser Pflanzen wurden damals nach Europa eingeführt.
Die hier angebotene Pflanze ist einer dieser beiden Sämlinge.
Aufgrund eines Frostschadens im letzten Jahr vor dem Winter musste die Pflanze von etwa zwei Metern Höhe kurz über dem Boden zurückgeschnitten werden.
Sie treibt aus dem verbliebenen Stamm neu aus. Das Wurzelsystem sowie die Genetik der Pflanze sind sechs Jahre alt.
Aufgrund des Alters der Wurzeln ist davon auszugehen, dass die Pflanze in zwei bis drei Jahren wieder blühen und Früchte tragen kann.
Botanisch unterscheidet sich die Varietät "Costada" (gerippt) von anderen Aureana-Formen durch ihre deutlich gerippten, leicht kugeligen Früchte mit kleinem Nabelansatz, die auch im reifen Zustand hellgrün bleiben.
Das transparente Fruchtfleisch umschließt ein bis drei Samen und hat einen süßen Jabuticaba-Geschmack mit feinen Honignoten.
Für ein optimales Gedeihen bevorzugt sie einen sonnigen bis sehr hellen Standort sowie ein durchlässiges, leicht saures Substrat, das feucht gehalten wird.
Als tropisch-subtropische Art muss sie im Winter an einem hellen Ort warm bei mindestens 10 bis 12 Grad Celsius überwintert werden.
