Eugenia sp. "Monitora" / Purple Monitora Myrtle
Eugenia sp. "Monitora" is an undescribed, exceptionally rare wild species belonging to the Myrtle family (Myrtaceae).
This botanical treasure hails from targeted wild collections in the highly biodiverse Mata Atlântica rainforest of Bahia, Brazil.
The moniker "Monitora" refers to its field recording during local environmental and biodiversity monitoring initiatives within Bahia's protected forest areas.
Botanically, the species features remarkably large, elliptic-lanceolate foliage with prominent venation and a firm, leathery texture.
The distinct, ovoid to slightly pointed berries transition from olive-green to reddish-brown and mature into a glossy, deep purple shade topped by persistent green calyx lobes.
The pale, juicy pulp surrounds a large single seed, offering a pleasantly refreshing, aromatic flavor profile typical of wild Atlantic Forest Eugenias.
With its extremely restricted natural range and undescribed scientific status, Eugenia sp. "Monitora" represents a prized collector item for neotropical Myrtaceae enthusiasts.
In cultivation, this humid rainforest species thrives in a warm, bright to partially shaded environment with elevated humidity.
It requires a rich, slightly acidic, highly porous substrate kept consistently moist.
As a tropical species native to Bahia, it is cold-sensitive and must be overwintered in a bright, warm location at a minimum temperature of 12 to 15 °C (54 to 59 °F).
