Santalum album, commonly known as Indian Sandalwood or True Sandalwood, is a botanically unique species belonging to the Sandalwood family (Santalaceae).
Native to the tropical regions of South Asia—primarily India and Indonesia—the heartwood of this species is recognized as one of the most valuable and expensive woods in the world.
Botanically, Santalum album exhibits a specialized hemiparasitic root strategy.
Using specialized root structures called haustoria, it attaches to the roots of neighboring host plants to draw water and essential nutrients while continuing to perform its own photosynthesis.
Due to this parasitic nature, cultivation requires the presence of a suitable host plant sharing the same container or growing area.
The primary utility and economic value of the tree stem from its aromatic heartwood, which is rich in essential oils.
Sandalwood oil and timber have been utilized for millennia in perfumery, cosmetics, incense production, and fine woodworking.
In cultivation, Indian Sandalwood offers a compelling botanical specimen for collectors of rare and unusual flora.
For optimal growth, it requires a bright, warm location alongside a well-draining, mineral-rich substrate kept consistently moist without waterlogging.

Das Santalum album, bekannt als Echter Sandelholzbaum oder Indisches Sandelholz, ist eine faszinierende botanische Besonderheit aus der Familie der Sandelholzgewächse (Santalaceae).
Beheimatet in den tropischen Regionen Südasiens – insbesondere in Indien und Indonesien –, zählt das Kernholz dieser Art zu den teuersten und begehrtesten Hölzern der Welt.
