Plinia cauliflora, widely known as Jaboticaba Sabará, is one of Brazil's most fascinating and popular fruit-bearing plants.
Its most spectacular feature is cauliflory: the white blossoms and later the dark fruits appear directly on the main trunk and thick branches rather than on the tips of the twigs.
In full ripeness, the entire trunk appears covered with glossy, deep purple to black pearls.
The fruits of the "Sabará" variety are considered particularly delicious and are among the best that the tropical plant world has to offer.
Beneath the firm, dark skin lies a snow-white, gelatinous pulp that is incredibly sweet, juicy, and refreshing.
The flavor is reminiscent of a mixture of grape and lychee, with its own unique, sophisticated note.
In addition to fruit production, the Jaboticaba is a premier ornamental and bonsai tree due to its exfoliating bark and delicate branching.
For healthy growth, the plant requires an acidic substrate and consistent watering, as it dislikes both waterlogging and drying out of the root ball.
